Lining Revealed – A Journey Through Folk Wisdom and Contemporary Vision

‘ From beadwork to embroidery, straw weaving to paper craft, patchwork quilts of nomadic tribes to silkscreen prints of agrarian island communities, handicraft techniques and everyday objects inherited through time immemorial have often been sources of inspiration and materials for contemporary artists. Both folk craft and contemporary art originate from humanity’s innate desires for creation, expression, exchange and identity, and are vessels for conveying emotion and reason.

Lining Revealed examines the interactions between folk craft and contemporary art by juxtaposing artworks, handicrafts and archival documents. Through the critical lens and creative manifestations of contemporary art, it reveals the historical, social and cultural significance embodied in folk craft and the role craft plays in reinvigorating contemporary vision. The exhibition also speaks to the importance of contemporary art in the continuity of cultural heritage, such as challenging the over-celebration of the handmade and encouraging us to look beyond the value frameworks and ideologies of modern society to uncover the deeper content and meaning of folk craft.’

Weaving Humour and Vulnerability | An Introspective and Intimate Visual Diary

Gold and silver joss paper, pills, and traditional Chinese medicine—these familiar elements are transformed into a multi-sensory art installation by artist Hong Kong artist Ellen Yiu. Through humour, she explores profound themes of life, aging, sickness and death.

1. ‘This World and The Next’ is intricately woven from joss paper that elevates beyond its ritualistic significance, prompting us to reflect on the importance of tradition and its relevance in our evolving world.

2.  In ‘Take My Home Away’, Ellen transforms her personal experiences into a visual diary. Through woodwork, ceramics, embroidery, sewing, and drawing, she invites visitors to imagine the relationships between objects, stories, and emotions.

3.  ‘If The Sky Falls, Use It as A Blanket’ subtly emits the fragrance of Chinese herbal medicine. The translucent textiles symbolise the flow of time, creating a relatable experience of healing and nostalgia that is both intimate and complex.

3.《 #天跌落嚟當被冚:藥毯 》隱約散發淡淡中藥香氣,半透明的織物象徵着時間流逝。兩者結合起來,創造出一種關於治療和懷舊的共享體驗,既私密又複雜。
